For Potential Residents
The state pages above contain listings for nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and residential facilities. Choosing the type of care depends on the current and long-term care needs of the resident. Many facilities provide multiple levels of care in one location by acting as a nursing home, assisted living facility, and independent living facility. Facilities that offer more than one service are officially known as Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs), but may go by various names such as retirement communities or senior living communities.
When researching facilities, it is important to understand their full capabilities to determine if it will align with your or the resident’s long-term needs. It is recommended to schedule a visit with the facility to get a feel for the location and learn about their services, their staff, and management.
Nursing Homes
Nursing homes, also known as skilled nursing facilities, provide around the clock housing, medical care, supervision, and rehab services. Nursing homes are ideal for residents who require a high level of medical care. Residents of nursing homes may be either long-term or short-term residents.
Assisted Living Facilities
Assisted Living provides housing with some supervision as well as help with personal care, daily routines, meals, and activities. Assisted living facilities do not generally provide ongoing healthcare. Assisted Living residents usually live in their own rooms or apartments and share common areas with other residents.
Independent Living Facilities
Also known as independent housing or residential facilities, this option is ideal for people who can mostly take care of themselves and do not require the same level of care found at an assisted living facility. Independent living facilities provide a setting for social interactions with other residents and organize regular activities for residents to participate in. Most facilities that offer independent living also offer assisted living, making them an ideal long-term care option.

Nursing homes and retirement communities employ hundreds of thousands of CNAs across the United States. According to the BLS, 34% of all CNAs in the United States are employed in nursing homes, and 16% are employed in Continuing Care Retirement Communities. These are the #1 and #3 sources of employment for CNAs.
Because nursing homes provide a higher level of medical care for their residents compared to assisted living facilities, nursing homes staff more CNAs per resident than any other type of healthcare facility. Many facilities, particularly nursing homes, provide CNA training and certification as a part of employment onboarding.
